Choosing a SIL provider is one of the most important decisions a family makes. The right provider makes daily life feel safe, supported, and full. The wrong fit can be stressful for everyone. Here are the key things to look for and the questions worth asking.
Check registration
From 1 July 2026, every SIL provider must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, or have applied to register by 1 October 2026. You can verify a provider’s registration at the NDIS Commission’s Search for a registered NDIS provider page. This is non-negotiable — an unregistered provider cannot legally deliver SIL.
Ask about staff
The people who provide daily support matter more than anything else. Key questions:
- Are support workers dedicated or rotating? Consistent staff build trust and genuine relationships. Rotating agency staff mean your family member has to re-explain their needs constantly.
- What qualifications and training do staff have? Look for providers whose staff hold relevant certifications (such as Certificate III in Individual Support or higher) and receive ongoing professional development.
- What happens when a shift cannot be filled? Every provider faces staffing gaps. What matters is whether they have a reliable backup plan.
Visit the home
Photos and brochures only tell part of the story. A tour lets you see the home in person, meet the team, and picture what daily life looks like. Look for:
- Is the home clean, welcoming, and well-maintained?
- Does it feel like a home or an institution?
- Are residents engaged and comfortable?
- Is there outdoor space, natural light, and room to personalise?
Ask about personalisation
SIL support should be built around individual goals, not a one-size-fits-all roster. Ask the provider:
- How do you tailor support to each person’s goals?
- How often is the support plan reviewed and updated?
- What happens if needs change over time?
Understand the costs
SIL is funded through your NDIS plan. However, rent, food, utilities, and personal expenses are typically paid from your own income (usually DSP and Rent Assistance). Ask the provider for a clear breakdown of what is NDIS-funded and what is out of pocket so there are no surprises.
Trust your instincts
Numbers and checklists matter, but so does how it feels. Do you feel welcome? Are staff genuine? Is the provider responsive to your questions? Families often know within the first visit whether a place is right.
